The IAFC Public Safety GIS Viewer provides multiple GIS layers including a national directory of fire departments, FEMA floodplain maps and more. Each of the layers may serve a unique purpose; the GIS Viewer enables first responders to assemble layers to view comprehensive information products within their community. Accessing this data was challenging because the information lives on many different websites. Using the National GIS Viewer, a responder can aggregate that data and drill down to see important information about their community.

Technology and information-gathering continues to expand exponentially around the world. Analyzed correctly, the fire and emergency service can leverage this data to improve service delivery, save lives and mitigate property loss at the local level.

The IAFC worked with Esri to create the National GIS Viewer to provide first responders an introduction to geospatially enabled decision-support tools and illustrate how GIS tools can enhance planning and daily operations.
